Hermanus whale watching season
When to go, where to look and how to plan a day from Cape Town.
Hermanus, about 1 h 30 from Cape Town, is one of the best places in the world to watch whales from land. Every year southern right whales come into Walker Bay to mate and calve, often just metres from the cliffs.
When is whale season?
Whales are in the bay from about June to early December, and sightings peak from August to October. Southern rights are the stars, with humpback and Bryde’s whales also seen. The Hermanus Whale Festival is usually held in late September, so check the dates if you prefer quieter streets.
Where to watch from land
- The cliff path: about 12 km of coastal walkway through town, with benches and lookouts
- Gearing’s Point and the Old Harbour: central, easy viewpoints with parking nearby
- Bring binoculars and a jacket: the wind off the bay is cold even on sunny days
Boat-based whale watching
Licensed boat trips leave from Hermanus New Harbour and take about 2 hours. They get you closer than the cliffs, but they depend on the sea, so plan them early in your stay in case of cancellation.
Make it a full day
- Drive out along Clarence Drive, one of the most scenic coastal roads in the Cape
- Stop at Stony Point in Betty’s Bay to see African penguins on the way
- Lunch in Hermanus or Stanford, then return via the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley
Our Hermanus whale coast day trip covers all of this with your own driver-guide.
Questions we get asked
Can you guarantee whale sightings?
No one can, as they are wild animals. In peak season (August to October) sightings from the cliffs are very common, and many days you will see several whales at once.
Is Hermanus a good day trip from Cape Town?
Yes. It is about 1 h 30 each way. Leave by 08:00 and you have a full day on the coast and are back in the city for dinner.
Are boat trips suitable for children?
Most operators take children, but there may be age limits and the sea can be rough. Check when you book, and take motion sickness tablets if anyone is prone.
What should we wear?
Layers. Even on sunny days the wind off Walker Bay is cool, especially on the cliff path and on boats.
